Art intern Clare Szydlowski became interested in art around the age of seven or eight while growing up in Buffalo, New York.
“Doing crafts with my grandmother really inspired me to do art,” said Szydlowski. “I did a lot of knitting, patchwork and quilt making with my grandma and a lot of beading and painting wooden boxes. I drew all the time.”
Szydlowski co-teaches the sophomore honors art class with art intern Sophie Johnson under the supervision of art teacher Rachel McIntire.
“A teacher of mine at San Francisco State had worked with Ms. McIntire, and she introduced me to the opportunity of being an intern here,” said Szydlowski.
Szydlowski is currently working towards a Master of Fine Arts at San Francisco State University. She also studied art at UC Santa Cruz, with a focus on printmaking.
“[UCSC] is where I discovered printmaking,” said Szydlowski. “[It] is an art form that involves the creation of multiples. Printmaking is a very process-oriented art, and because I did a lot of process-oriented crafts, I really fell in love with printmaking.”
“Clare brings a lot of positive energy,” said McIntire. “She has lots of creative ideas about inspiring the students. She inspires them by sharing her personal experiences and art work as well as others’ artwork.”
Szydlowski says she wants to continue to teach once her one-year internship expires.
“Teaching is a really important part of my practice [of art] that I want to continue,” said Szydlowski.
